I found out yesterday that I'd been mishearing a lyric for 35 years! It happened when I was reading an excellent interview with one of the song's writers, Thom Bell.
WRONG: Betsy Ross sewed her little white shoes
RIGHT: Tootsie Roll soul in little white shoes
